The challenge

In a time of low public trust in institutions, the public needs access to fact-based reporting about elections and race results.

How we helped

The 2024 elections are expected to be among the closest and potentially most contested in American history. AP’s democracy and election teams are forging collaborations, not just to report stories, but to strengthen the news ecosystem and prepare for what’s to come.

For example, in May 2024, AP co-hosted an event with The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, which showcased experiments aimed at increasing civic activity. AP also co-hosted a monthly webinar series with the American Press Institute (API) that featured AP’s journalists, audience experts and API representatives and other voices from the field. Topics included misinformation and AI, planning election coverage, strategies to keep audience engaged after the “election bump,” and mental health supports for journalists.

Extending the reach, AP amplified content from the webinars and other sources, via the API newsletter, providing practical tips, guides, and checklists for newsrooms as the election approaches.

The result

Thanks to philanthropic support, ahead of the November elections AP is providing election services, coverage, and results interactives to nonprofit and small, independent newsrooms.
