Josh Hoffner named AP Global Sports Editor

The Associated Press today announced that Josh Hoffner has been named its next Global Sports editor.

We’re pleased to announce that Josh Hoffner has been named The Associated Press’ next Global Sports Editor.

Josh brings deep institutional knowledge, strong editorial judgment and a proven ability to lead large, complex teams through change. He got his start at AP in North Dakota and went on to hold editing and management roles in Arizona and New York, including the past four years leading AP’s 50-state U.S. newsroom.

In his most recent role, he guided one of our most demanding operations with clarity and discipline, led a successful expansion of video and digital-first journalism, and directed coverage of major stories including immigration and border enforcement, elections, shootings, floods, fires and hurricanes. He has served as an editor at two Olympic Games and has worked closely with Sports across text, video and photo on major breaking news and enterprise coverage. An avid sports fan, he brings deep knowledge of the industry and its evolving landscape.

Josh will begin transitioning into the role and will work with us on a comprehensive succession plan. We will share more details on timing in the coming weeks.

We also want to thank Oscar Dixon for his leadership as interim Sports editor. Oscar has ensured continuity, high standards and strong execution during this transition period, and we’re grateful for his steady hand. He will continue to lead our Sports operation during the transition period.

Sports plays a central role in AP’s journalism and growth strategy. We believe Josh is well positioned to lead the department with ambition, rigor and a collaborative spirit.
