Steven Sloan rejoins Washington bureau
In a memo to staff, it was announced that Steven Sloan has rejoined the Washington bureau, where he will report and write about the nexus between politics, the White House, Congress and policy. Sloan returns to the bureau after a year-long assignment as AP’s director of news strategy, where he led work on grant-funded journalism initiatives.

You may have noticed a familiar byline on stories lately. We’re very happy that Steven Sloan, who has led our coverage of elections and politics, is rejoining the Washington bureau to report and write about the nexus between politics, the White House, Congress and policy.
As you all know from working with Steven over the years, he is a terrific collaborator who has deep expertise and knowledge about politics in America and how institutions in Washington work. He will work closely with reporting teams across the bureau and around the AP to deliver distinctive, high-impact stories that connect the dots about how decisions are made in Washington, who is making them and how they impact people and places around the country and world. He’ll have a broad portfolio, providing context around the biggest stories in Washington and often tying them to larger cultural trends
Steven spent much of 2025 as a director on AP’s news strategy team, where he helped launch a pilot project that delivers AP journalism to nonprofit state and local newsrooms. He also worked closely with several news teams, including spending several months embedded on Sports. Prior to that, he was deputy Washington bureau chief and political director, overseeing coverage of politics and multiple elections. Before joining AP as politics editor in 2018, Steven was at CNN where he served in several leadership roles including director of enterprise reporting. He also was a Congress editor at Politico and a reporter at Politico, Bloomberg and other news organizations covering taxes and fiscal policy.
