AP journalist Alberto Arce wins 2012 Rory Peck Award

Arce is honored for video reporting as a freelancer in Libya before he joined AP as a full-time staffer based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in February 2012. He shares the award with freelance photographer and video journalist Ricardo Garcia Vilanova, with whom he made the winning film, “Misrata, Victory or Death.” 

The film tells the story of a group of rebel fighters in Mistrata. Arcre and Vilanova travelled to the city in a rebel-sponsored supply boat from Malta and documented the group at the height of the siege.  The film follows the young fighters from the front line to their homes, capturing accounts of their lives before the revolution and their hopes for the future. The feature was self-funded and later broadcast by VTR/ Canvas, Canal Sur and Direct TV.

“Alberto Arce is a courageous and multi-faceted journalist who has been doing terrific work for us since he joined AP,” said John Daniszewski, AP vice president and senior managing editor for international news. “We’re thrilled to have him on staff and are proud of his accomplishment.” 

A recent example of Arce’s powerful journalism is his widely-read story of a father’s search for justice in Honduras, which is part of AP’s ongoing efforts to write about life in one of the world’s most violent countries and the growing militarization of Latin America.

AP is a sponsor of the Rory Peck Trust, which produces the Rory Peck Awards. Arce accepted his award at a ceremony on November 28, at London's British Film Institute (BFI) Southbank.
