AP’s visual journalists led global news coverage over the weekend with standout reporting from the ground during protests in Southern California sparked by immigration arrests. As President Donald Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard, AP was first to set the visual agenda with continuous, live on-the-scene coverage.
Photographers and videojournalists including Jae Hong, Eric Thayer, Ethan Swope, Damian Dovarganes and Eugene Garcia provided both stills and video that appeared across front pages and homepages of more than 20 major global outlets.
AP was the first to deliver a live video feed from outside the Los Angeles detention center, capturing key moments such as arrests, confrontations between federal agents and demonstrators, and the destruction of vehicles.
Visual journalists documented the full arc of the protests, including the firing of less-lethal munitions, protesters blocking streets, and federal law enforcement dispersing crowds.
Judges praised AP’s speed, logistical coordination and on-the-ground presence, which gave the organization a competitive edge and allowed for coverage that was both comprehensive and immediate.
