In a memo to staff on Wednesday, Vice President and Head of Global Newsgathering Paul Haven announced that Ricardo Zuniga has been named director of global beats, where he will oversee some of AP’s most vital coverage areas including business, entertainment and sports:

In this new role, Ricardo will guide some of AP’s most important and impactful coverage areas, working with beat team leaders to deliver exclusive and engaging journalism for customers and digital audiences.

Ricardo has a proven track record of digital innovation. Since 2022, he has led a modernization of AP’s industry-leading sports department, leaning into coverage of the business of sports, race and gender issues, as well as viral moments that capture the world’s attention. Under Ricardo’s leadership, Sports has also embraced technology and other innovative strategies to maintain comprehensive game coverage our customers count on us for.

Ricardo and the sports staff are leaders in digital storytelling, from behind-the-scenes videos to interactives to ambitious social promotion around the AP Top 25 and other signature products. Sports has also been a key collaborator with our colleagues in Digital and Revenue, taking on experiments and new practices. We see a huge opportunity for the Global Beats – entertainment, business, health and science, climate, sports, education, religion and trends and culture – to double down on this approach.

Ricardo first joined the AP in 1998 when he was just 20 years old as a reporter in our San Juan, Puerto Rico, bureau. He spent four years at ESPN, where he gained key insights from the perspective of an AP customer, before returning to lead Sports three years ago.

Ricardo will begin his new role on June 2, reporting to me. Please join me in congratulating Ricardo and wishing him great success in his new role.
