CLEVELAND (AP) — Delano Massey, a multimedia reporter and newsroom leader, has been named Ohio news editor for The Associated Press.
The appointment was announced Monday by Karen Testa, the news cooperative’s editor for the east region of the United States.
“Delano has a legacy of elevating the journalism across formats anywhere he has worked, and we’re thrilled he’s bringing that competitive drive and spirit of innovation to lead the AP team in his native state,” Testa said.
As news editor, Massey will work with AP journalists based in Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Cincinnati to develop the most competitive enterprise and spot stories, and to hold public officials accountable through strong records reporting.
Massey, 37, joins AP from WEWS, the ABC affiliate in Cleveland, where he worked with a converged newsroom as digital director. He led coverage of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and the NBA championship for the Cavaliers.
Massey formerly worked at WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky, and was recognized as best digital journalist by the Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters association.
Before making his move to television, Massey was the metro editor at the Lexington Herald-Leader, where he led coverage of violence during Kentucky’s NCAA national championship celebration. He was also a reporter at the newspaper and at the Akron Beacon-Journal and the Belleville News-Democrat.
Massey is a graduate of the University of Akron and attended Maynard Institute’s Media Academy at Harvard University.
Massey will be based in Cleveland, and begin Oct. 3. He succeeds Deb Martin, who retired earlier this year.
