Media seeking open court proceedings in Florida

PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) -- The Associated Press and other media organizations are seeking to ensure that court proceedings and documents remain publicly open in the prosecution of Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz.

The AP and others filed a motion Tuesday in Broward County Circuit Court seeking to intervene to guarantee public access. The motion came after Cruz’s public defender on Monday filed a sealed motion.

The media organizations say Florida law permits a judge to deny public access to a criminal proceeding in rare circumstances and only after the media has a chance to be heard in opposition.

The 19-year-old Cruz is accused of killing 17 people and wounding more than a dozen others in a shooting last Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He has not yet entered a plea.
