On an airboat through Texas floods and on the ground of deadly Oklahoma tornadoes, AP journalists Juan Lozano, Lekan Oyekanmi, Graha Brewer and Ken Miller emerged with distinctive visuals and exclusive storytelling.

In Oklahoma, reporter Miller quickly got on the road following an overnight outbreak of tornadoes across the state, gathering reporting and visuals from two hard-hit towns where storms demolished houses and left three people dead. One was the rural community of Sulphur, where Oklahoma-based Brewer of the Race and Ethnicity team returned the next day and came away with a distinctive story of the town newspaper’s determination to publish that week despite a damaged newsroom. In Texas, video journalist Oyekanmi and reporter Lozano rushed to flooded areas of Houston for all-formats reporting during one of city’s most destructive weather events since Hurricane Harvey. Oyekanmi went live on AP Newsroom from an airboat while a team of Texas Game Wardens rescued families (and their dogs) from flooded homes.
